Description
Pachypodium densiflorum var. densiflorum is a caudiciform succulent native to Madagascar, valued for its swollen trunk and bright yellow flowers. The plant develops a thick, bottle-shaped caudex that stores water, topped with a crown of narrow, glossy green leaves during the growing season. Mature specimens typically reach 30 to 90 cm in height. In late spring to summer, it produces clusters of vivid yellow, funnel-shaped flowers, creating a striking contrast against the armored, spiny stem.
This species requires excellent drainage and thrives in mineral, sandy, or gritty substrates. It prefers full sun to very bright light and warm temperatures. During its active growing season, moderate watering is beneficial, while in dormancy it should be kept almost completely dry to prevent rot. It is well suited for container cultivation and collectors of succulent or caudiciform plants.
Sow seeds in late spring to early summer when temperatures are consistently warm, ideally between 22°C to 30°C. Warm soil conditions significantly improve germination. In cooler climates, sowing indoors with bottom heat is recommended for reliable and uniform sprouting.
