Banksia hookeriana, commonly known as Hooker’s banksia, is a striking shrub species belonging to the genus Banksia within the Proteaceae family. It is native to the sandy, nutrient-poor plains of southwestern Western Australia. This species is highly prized in horticulture and the cut flower industry for its spectacular and vibrant floral display.

The plant typically grows as a dense, rounded shrub, reaching heights of up to 4 meters and a similar width. Its most notable features are its long, narrow, and deeply serrated leaves and its large, cylindrical flower spikes. These spikes, which can be up to 12 cm long and 10 cm wide, are initially creamy white and gradually open to reveal a stunning bright orange or golden yellow color. They bloom over the cooler months, from late autumn to spring, and are a valuable source of nectar for native birds, particularly honeyeaters. The spent flowers develop into woody seed pods, or follicles, which store seeds. Banksia hookeriana is a “reseeder” species, meaning that it is killed by fire, but the heat from the fire triggers the release of its seeds, allowing the plant to regenerate.
