Description
Brassica rapa subsp. rapa is a fast-growing biennial root vegetable widely cultivated for its swollen root and nutritious leafy greens. The plant typically forms a round to slightly elongated root with white to purple skin, while the tender leaves can be harvested as turnip greens. It thrives in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil and matures quickly, often ready for harvest within 45 – 70 days. Turnips are valued for their mild, slightly sweet flavor when young and are enjoyed fresh, cooked, roasted, or pickled. Cold-tolerant and versatile, they are suitable for spring and autumn planting.
