Description
Momordica charantia ‘White’ is a cultivated variant of bitter melon distinguished by its pale white to creamy skin and slightly milder bitterness compared to the common green forms. This fast-growing, tropical vine produces slender, climbing stems equipped with tendrils that readily attach to trellises or supports. The deeply lobed foliage is bright green, and small yellow flowers give way to elongated, warty fruits that can reach 15 to 25 cm in length, depending on growing conditions.
The fruits are valued in many cuisines for their unique, slightly less intense bitter flavor, making them more approachable for culinary use. They are commonly harvested while immature for best texture and taste and are used in stir-fries, soups, and traditional medicinal preparations.
This plant thrives in full sun and warm, humid conditions, requiring fertile, well-drained soil and regular watering. It is highly productive when provided with vertical support, which improves airflow and fruit quality. As a heat-loving species, it performs best in tropical and subtropical climates.
Sow seeds directly in warm soil or start indoors 3 to 4 weeks before transplanting. Due to the hard seed coat, soaking seeds in warm water for 12 to 24 hours can improve germination rates. Plant seeds about 1 to 2 cm deep and maintain temperatures between 24°C and 30°C for optimal germination, which typically occurs within 7 to 14 days. Transplant carefully once seedlings are established, ensuring minimal root disturbance. Provide support early in growth for best development and yield.
