Description
This black pansy is truly stunning, a valuable addition in our gardens.
The plants are compact, support 2 to 3 flowers of velvety consistency and deep black, dazzling.
They are beautiful in planting together with other plants of small size and diverse colors, promoting an amazing highlight in flower beds of multiple species.
Resistant to cold and mild frosts, they will bloom in their first year in cultivation.
In regions where the climate is very hot, the species should receive protection from the sun, its flowers will wither in high temperatures.
The seeds germinate more readily in dark places (they need dark places to germinate), without any solar incidence.
Especially gratifying is its planting together with white and yellow blooms, make a magnificent spectacle.
Regions where continuous frosts occur in winter, the species will behave as annual, in other regions as biennial or perennial.
Germination Guide
🌍 Europe (hybrid derived from Viola tricolor and other European viola species)
Moderate
Viola x Wittrockiana 'Clear Crystals Black' is a striking pansy cultivar prized for its jet-black flowers with yellow centers and compact growth habit, reaching 15-30 cm in height. This hybrid is derived from several European viola species and is grown worldwide as a cool-season annual for garden beds, containers, and borders. Seeds require complete darkness and cool conditions to germinate successfully, making this variety moderately easy for gardeners who follow proper seed-starting protocols.

Additional notes
Cold stratification for 2 weeks in refrigerator at 4°C (33-39°F) breaks dormancy and improves uniform germination. Soaking seeds in water for 12-24 hours prior to stratification can enhance results.
Substrate & Container
Recommended substrate
Well-draining, light, porous seed-starting mix or potting soil; cover lightly with vermiculite or peat moss
Recommended container
Cell trays or seed-starting pots with drainage holes
Growing Tips
Keep seeds in complete darkness during germination—cover with opaque material or place in a dark cupboard. After cold stratification, move seeds to a location with temperatures of 65-70°F (18-21°C) in darkness. Use bottom watering or fine misting to avoid displacing tiny seeds. Once germination begins, remove light-blocking cover and place seedlings under grow lights with 12-16 hours of light daily. Thin seedlings when they develop 2-3 true leaves. Harden off seedlings before transplanting outdoors. These pansies bloom best in cool weather (spring and fall) and prefer full sun to partial shade. Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged to prevent root rot.
