Description

Pinus thunbergii, commonly called Japanese Black Pine, is a striking evergreen tree native to coastal areas of Japan and South Korea. Known for its rugged, dark-gray bark and dense, irregularly spreading crown, it often develops a picturesque, windswept appearance, making it a favorite in traditional Japanese gardens and bonsai cultivation.

This hardy pine can reach up to 20 to 30 m tall in nature, but it also adapts well to container growth and pruning. Its needles are dark green, stiff, and in pairs, providing year-round interest. Naturally tolerant of poor soils, wind, and salt spray, Pinus thunbergii is especially valued as a coastal windbreak tree as well as an ornamental specimen.
