Leucadendron strobilinum is an attractive evergreen shrub native to the Cape fynbos of South Africa. It grows up to 2 meters tall and is admired for its narrow silvery-green leaves and showy yellow flower bracts that appear in spring, adding brightness to the landscape. Like other members of the Proteaceae family, it is well adapted to dry, sandy, and acidic soils, thriving in full sun with good drainage. Its seed cones and bracts are also prized for use in cut flower arrangements. This hardy, low-maintenance shrub is ideal for waterwise gardens, coastal areas, and habitat restoration projects.

💧
Soaking — 24 hours
Immersion in warm water for 24 hours allowing to cool to room temperature, or smoke seed solution for 18-24 hours. Prefer rainwater.

Smoke/Fire treatment
Smoke treatment recommended. Can soak seeds in smoke solution overnight or apply smoke treatment to soil surface after sowing. Smoke seed treatment reduces germination time and increases germination rates.

Additional notes
Pre-treatment with smoke or warm water highly recommended. Smoke treatment is beneficial in reducing germination time and increasing germination percentage in Proteaceae family members.
Substrate & Container
Recommended substrate
Well-drained acidic medium with pH 5.5: 2 parts peat or decomposed pine needles, 2 parts coarse river sand, 1 part perlite or polystyrene pellets. Seeds approximately 2cm apart covered with thin layer of clean river sand.
Recommended container
Seed trays in semi-shade. Do not germinate in hot houses, with bottom heat, or under glass.
Growing Tips
Sow seeds in autumn when day-night temperature difference is around 12°C or in spring with daytime above 22°C and night below 10°C. Keep seeds moist but not waterlogged to prevent rot. Sterilize growing medium to prevent fungal infections. Do NOT use fertilizers containing phosphorus. Protect seed trays from mice, birds, and squirrels with shade netting. Transplant seedlings into individual containers once first true leaves appear. Keep in semi-shade and avoid direct sunlight during germination.
