Description
This kit includes Protea caffra subsp. kilimandscharica seeds (10 seeds) + 01 Smoke Seed Primer Disc.
Smoke Seed Primer is ideal for treating seeds of Proteas. Many wildflower seeds are dormant and need very specific conditions for germination. The smoke seed primer solution contains a combination of natural substances that overcome dormancy and stimulate seed germination. The degree of germination success varies with the species, but on average, treated seeds give at least twice the number of seedlings that untreated seeds do. (Source: proteaseeds)
Protea caffra subsp. kilimandscharica, commonly known as the Kilimanjaro sugarbush, is a subspecies of evergreen shrub or small tree native to the high-altitude montane and subalpine zones of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya in East Africa. It is known for its distinctive, showy, goblet-shaped flower heads, which are typically pink to deep red and surrounded by colorful bracts. Adapted to a harsh environment with rocky slopes, volcanic soils, and significant temperature fluctuations, this plant features thick, leathery leaves that help it conserve water. It is a resilient species that plays a key ecological role in its high-elevation habitat.

Difficult
Protea caffra subsp. kilimandscharica (Alpine Sugarbush) is a subspecies endemic to high-altitude montane regions of East Africa, particularly Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya, belonging to the Proteaceae family. This species requires careful germination conditions including smoke treatment, specific temperature fluctuations, and well-draining acidic soil to overcome natural seed dormancy. Seeds germinate in 22-90 days under proper conditions with smoke primer treatment significantly improving germination success.

Additional notes
Apply fungicide treatment such as Thiram after smoke treatment and before planting to prevent fungal infections
Substrate & Container
Recommended substrate
2 parts coarse river sand, 2 parts peat or decomposed pine needles, 1 part vermiculite or perlite. pH approximately 5.5. Ensure excellent drainage
Recommended container
500 ml plastic seedling bag or individual containers with drainage holes
Growing Tips
Maintain high humidity during germination with early morning watering only, using rainwater if available. Provide semi-shade with 30% shade cloth initially, then gradually increase light exposure once cotyledons appear. Sterilize soil with boiling water before use and protect seedlings from rodents and birds. Allow substrate to dry slightly between waterings in afternoons to reduce fungal infection risk. Do not allow soil to dry out completely. Continue daily watering throughout germination period. Expose seedlings to full sun once true leaves develop. Avoid brackish or alkaline water. This species is challenging to cultivate and sensitive to root disturbance, so minimize handling after transplanting
