Description
Momordica subangulata subsp. renigera is a vigorous climbing vine native to tropical Asia, valued for its ornamental fruits and traditional uses. The plant produces slender, twining stems with deeply lobed green leaves and tendrils that allow it to climb supports easily. Small yellow flowers are followed by distinctive, warty to spiny fruits that turn from green to bright orange or red when ripe, eventually splitting open to reveal seeds coated in vivid red arils.
While related to cultivated bitter melon, the fruits are generally more bitter and are used in traditional cuisines and herbal practices in some regions. The plant thrives in warm, humid conditions with full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. It grows rapidly and benefits from trellising or vertical support, making it suitable for fences, pergolas, and productive garden spaces.
Sow seeds in spring to early summer when temperatures are consistently warm, ideally between 22°C to 32°C. Soaking seeds in warm water for 12 to 24 hours before planting can improve germination. In tropical climates, seeds can be sown throughout the warm season for continuous growth.
