Description
The Rose Mallee is a eucalyptus shrub or small tree growing to between 6 and 9 feet in cultivation. It is a compact shrub that has smooth bluish bark and silvery grey oval leaves which combine well with the large conspicuous red blooms and big conical gum nuts that it produces for most of the year. It is similar to the eucalyptus macrocarpa that we also offer, but is smaller, with smaller flowers and a more reliable shape. It is nectar producing during flowering and is a favourite with nectar seeking birds.
The special feature of this species is its drought resistance which, although it is slightly frost sensitive until fully established.

Easy
Eucalyptus rhodantha, commonly called Rose Mallee or Rose Gum, is an endangered ornamental shrub native to Western Australia, known for its striking silvery-blue foliage and brilliant red to pink flowers. Seeds germinate readily without pretreatment in 10-28 days at cool temperatures (18-22°C), making it an accessible species for seed propagation. This is one of the easiest Australian eucalyptus species to grow from seed with proper drainage and bright light.

Growing Tips
Sow seeds on top of slightly moist, well-draining soil and cover lightly with a fine layer of sand to reduce damping-off risk. Provide bright light immediately after sowing as seeds require light to germinate. Maintain semi-moist conditions through regular misting without waterlogging. Keep seedlings in bright light; avoid transplanting until plants are established. Use a propagator or humidity tent to retain moisture. Keep soil temperature between 18-22°C for optimal germination. Do not discard dormant seeds quickly; they may germinate when environmental conditions match their natural habitat requirements.
