Description

Majidea zanguebarica is a highly ornamental small tree native to the coastal regions of East Africa. Growing to a manageable height of 5 to 10 meters, it features a rounded, compact canopy with lush, pinnate green foliage that provides beautiful dappled shade. Its moderate size and attractive form make it an outstanding choice for tropical landscapes, focal point plantings, and large container gardening.

The tree produces dense clusters of small, fragrant greenish-red flowers, but its most famous feature appears during the fruiting stage. The seed pods split open to reveal a striking, bright red velvety interior that beautifully contrasts with perfectly round, velvety black or bluish-grey seeds. These unique seeds look exactly like dark pearls and are highly prized by artisans and crafters worldwide for creating premium botanical jewelry, beadwork, and decorative arts.

Mgambo tree thrives in warm tropical and subtropical climates and is highly sensitive to frost. It flourishes in full sun to partial shade and requires a well-draining soil mix to prevent root rot. While it appreciates regular watering during its early establishment phase, mature trees become quite drought tolerant and resilient. With its stunning seed display and relatively low maintenance requirements, this tree is a rewarding addition to any warm climate garden or bright indoor atrium.
