Description
A giant lily native from the Himalayas to northern Myanmar and China that produces a stalk every spring to eventually more than 3 m (10 ft.) tall from an underground bulb. The leaves are large and heart-shaped or oval. After 6 or more years from seed, huge, most magnificently scented white flowers appear in a terminal inflorescence. After flowering, the main bulb dies but produces several offshoots that will flower after 3 to 4 years. It will grow without much protection in USDA Zones 8 to 9 but can also be grown in colder climates with heavy mulching to keep the ground frost free.
Native specie of southern tropical and subtropical areas of asia
Imponent specie, of extraordinary growth, their flowers are white and organized in groups in the high of a juicy caule that emerges among their foliage, promoting a true spectacle during the summer.
Fresh regions can be cultivated in the full sun with light shading or the shadow and in hot regions of brazil, the shadow or shadow may be cultivated. Prefer your plantio with any protection against the sun strong in the hotter hours during the day.
In regions which occurred, should receive protection during the winter.
The specie are required in rich soil, with good weather and that promotes good drainage, enough to resist dry.
Really fantastic specie, their leaf is bright and textured green, extremely perfumed flowers.
The specie is rustic and establishes easily, multiplying years after year and forming a beautiful focal point in gardens.
Germination Guide
🌍 Himalayas east to Myanmar and China
Moderate
Cardiocrinum giganteum, commonly called Giant Himalayan Lily, is a bulbous perennial native to woodlands of the Himalayas, China, and Myanmar. Seeds possess deep simple morphophysiological dormancy with underdeveloped embryos requiring extended variable temperature stratification to overcome dormancy. Under natural conditions, germination takes 18-19 months, but specialized temperature cycling can reduce this to 5-6 months.

🌡️ Temperature alternation recommended
— Complex variable temperature stratification is most effective: warm phase 25/15°C for 60 days, moderate phase 15/5°C for 60 days, cold phase 5°C for 60 days. Germination initiates after approximately 130 days of stratification.

Additional notes
Sow seeds in moist potting mix in plastic bag at 13-18°C for 2-3 weeks. Transfer to refrigerator for 4-6 weeks cold stratification. Variable temperature stratification: 25/15°C (60 days) → 15/5°C (60 days) → 5°C (60 days) can shorten germination to 5-6 months. Seeds have underdeveloped embryos requiring extended stratification period.
Substrate & Container
Recommended substrate
well-draining potting mix, peat and perlite, fertile humus-rich soil
Recommended container
plastic bag for initial stratification, seed tray or pot for germination
Growing Tips
Do not apply artificial heat as it prevents germination. Keep seeds continuously moist but not waterlogged after stratification begins. Germination can extend 1-2 years depending on seed maturity and stratification effectiveness. Fresh seeds sown immediately after dispersal may germinate sooner than stored seeds. Keep seed trays undisturbed; germination may occur in second year. Seedlings prefer partial shade and rich, moist soil similar to hosta growing conditions. Plants reach flowering size 5-7 years from seed. Species is intolerant of hot, sunny exposures where foliage burns.
