Germination Guide
🌍 Central China (Hubei and Shaanxi provinces)
Moderate
Kolkwitzia amabilis, commonly known as Beauty Bush, is a deciduous shrub native to central China that produces abundant bell-shaped pink flowers with yellow throats in late spring. Seeds require an extended cold stratification period of 90 days to break dormancy, making seed propagation moderately challenging but rewarding. Light is essential for germination, and warm imbibition followed by cold stratification mimics natural conditions.

Additional notes
Cold stratification is essential; seeds require moist cold period for 90 days to break dormancy.
Substrate & Container
Recommended substrate
Peat/perlite mix or well-draining seed-starting mix
Recommended container
Seed trays or pots with drainage holes; use humidity dome to maintain moisture
Growing Tips
Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep on moist seed-starting mix without covering completely, as seeds need light to germinate. Use a humidity dome or clear cover to maintain moisture; open briefly daily for air circulation. Do not use heat pads—avoid hot conditions. After cold stratification, germination typically occurs within 60 days in spring, though some seeds may wait until the following spring. Be patient; germination can be slow and sporadic. Keep substrate consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once seedlings emerge with two true leaves, transplant into individual pots in bright light.
