Sesbania bispinosa is a robust, fast growing annual or short lived perennial shrub native to tropical regions of Asia and Africa. Capable of reaching impressive heights of 1.5 to 3 meters, it develops a tall, erect growth habit with thick stems that are distinctively armed with small, sharp prickles. The foliage is incredibly lush, featuring long, pinnate leaves composed of dozens of tiny, delicate green leaflets that create a beautiful feathery texture. Its strong vertical presence and incredibly rapid growth rate make it a popular choice for quick screens and temporary structural interest in large garden spaces.

During the late summer months, the plant produces lovely racemes of classic pea shaped flowers that dangle gracefully from the leaf axils. These striking blooms are primarily bright yellow and often feature intricate streaks or speckling of dark reddish purple along the petals. After flowering, the plant develops long, slender, cylindrical seed pods that curve slightly and contain numerous small, smooth seeds. Prickly Sesban thrives in warm tropical and subtropical climates and is incredibly adaptable to a wide range of challenging environments. It requires full sun exposure to achieve its rapid growth and maximum height. One of the most remarkable traits of this plant is its ability to flourish in heavy, waterlogged soils and saline conditions where many other plants fail to survive.
