Description
Ficus obliqua, commonly known as the small-leaved fig, Australian banyan, or banyan fig, is a large evergreen tree in the Moraceae family, native to Australia, Papua New Guinea, and parts of the Pacific. It can grow up to 15 to 30 meters tall, with a broad, spreading canopy and characteristic aerial roots that develop into additional trunks over time, creating the impressive “banyan” form.
The tree produces small yellow to purple figs that serve as an important food source for birds, bats, and other wildlife. Due to its size and vigorous growth, Ficus obliqua is best suited for large landscapes, parks, and natural plantings, where it provides excellent shade, habitat, and ecological value. In tropical and subtropical climates, it is a striking and resilient feature tree.
