Description
Leucadendron discolor seeds can benefit from Seed Smoke Primer, which is also available in our shop. Make sure to take a look!
Leucadendron discolor is an evergreen shrub native to South Africa’s Western Cape, belonging to the Proteaceae family. It typically grows 1 to 3 meters tall and is valued for its striking silvery-green leaves and colorful bracts, which surround the inconspicuous flowers. Like other Leucadendron species, it is dioecious, with separate male and female plants.
The seeds are hard, nut-like, and enclosed in woody cones produced by female plants. They are adapted to survive fire and are released only when the cones open, often after exposure to heat. Seeds remain viable for long periods and are dispersed by wind once released.
Germination Guide
🌍 Cape Provinces of South Africa, endemic to Piketberg Mountains
Moderate
Leucadendron discolor, commonly known as the Piketberg Conebush or Red Conebush, is an evergreen shrub endemic to the Cape Provinces of South Africa, valued for its vibrant red and yellow floral bracts used in the cut flower industry. Seeds germinate in 14-60 days under appropriate conditions with warm days and cool nights, though germination rates are typically moderate at 20-40%. This slow-growing species requires fire-heat stimulation in its natural habitat but can be propagated from seed in cultivation with proper pre-treatment such as smoke exposure or warm water soaking.

Smoke seed treatment or warm water soaking recommended for improved germination. Temperature fluctuation (warm days and cold nights) beneficial for germination
Substrate & Container
Recommended substrate
Well-drained seed bed of equal parts coarse sand, loam and acid leaf mold or peat moss; or peat with perlite 60/40 ratio. Light covering of sand or milled bark after sowing
Recommended container
Seed trays or seedbeds placed in sunny position; transparent plastic container with lid
Growing Tips
Use systemic fungicide dust on seeds before sowing to prevent fungal issues. Maintain consistent moisture without waterlogging—keep substrate moist but never soggy. Provide bright light but avoid direct harsh sunlight during early germination; artificial lighting may be needed. Once seedlings develop two true leaves, prick out into small pots and move to lightly shaded area with good air circulation. After 50-100mm height or one year growth, transfer to garden. Do not use phosphorus-containing fertilizers at any stage. Check humidity every 2-3 days if using sealed containers. Temperatures 16-22°C with 12°C day-night differential are optimal; sow in autumn or spring depending on local climate. Seeds may remain dormant and germinate in following year if conditions are not initially favorable.
