Dalbergia sissoo is the tree of the state of punjab (india) and the province of punjab (pakistan).

Average temperature may vary from (below zero to 50ºc), can resist from average 2,000 million annual precipitation to dry 3 to 4 months. Soils may vary from pure sand and gravel to rich aluvião in river rivers. Are intolerant the shadow.

In bihar (northern india), shisham’s largest producer, the tree is planted on the roadside, along the channels and as a shadow tree for tea plantations.

The cerne is extremely durable and resistant to coupins.

As wood for fuel is cultivated in a 10 – 15 years rotation, calorific power for alburn and cerne is related to be excellent (4,908 kcal / kg and 5,181 kcal / kg, respectively). The species have excellent coppicing (capability for new trunk and / or root growth), various cutting cycles.

Young bark are light and dark as the aging, growth is very fast.

*** dalbergia sissoo is known for containing neoflavonoid dalbergichromene, it can be extracted from the hair and cerne’s bark. Neoflavone isolated for the first time from natural sources was calophylloide, from calophyllum inophyllum seeds.

Germination Guide

Moderate

Dalbergia sissoo, known as North Indian rosewood or shisham, is a fast-growing, nitrogen-fixing deciduous tree native to the Himalayan foothills of India, Pakistan, and Iran. Seeds have no dormancy and germinate readily within 1-3 weeks when fresh. This legume species is highly valued for its durable timber and ecological benefits, making it important for agroforestry and land restoration projects.

Seed Pre-treatment
  • 💧

    Soaking — 36 hours
Soak in warm water for 12-48 hours before sowing. Do not use hot water as seeds have thin seedcoat and high temperatures kill embryo. Room temperature to warm water recommended. Change water 2-3 times during soaking period. Use 5 times volume of water relative to seed volume.

    Additional notes
Water soaking is recommended. Rhizobium inoculation recommended after soaking and before sowing to enhance nitrogen fixation. Fresh seeds require no pre-treatment. Stored seeds benefit from soaking to accelerate germination.

Substrate & Container
Recommended substrate
Well-draining potting mix, peat and perlite, or loamy sandy soil

Recommended container
Container with good drainage, seed tray, or polybag filled with 2kg soil; may be placed in sealed polythene bag or ziplock for moisture retention during germination period

Growing Tips
Maintain soil moisture consistently but avoid waterlogging. Keep temperature warm (75-85°F or 24-29°C) to encourage germination. Shade seedlings during hottest hours of the day during germination period. Once germinated, seedlings are intolerant of shade and require partial to full sun. After germination, transfer to individual containers with care to avoid damaging the long taproot. Acclimate seedlings for 2-8 weeks before field transplantation. Seedlings develop fast with strong taproots; root-prune containers monthly to prevent rooting into nursery floor. Inoculate with Rhizobium bacteria before or after sowing for enhanced nitrogen fixation. Transplant during cool parts of day (early morning or late afternoon) and keep under nursery shade for 7-10 days. Seedlings ready for field planting when 20 cm tall. Regular weeding necessary for several years after establishment.
