Hedychium gardnerianum – Kahili Ginger

Description

A robust ginger native to humid forests in the eastern Himalayas, the Khasia Hills and Indo-China between 1200 and 2400 m with thick shoots from 1 to about 1.8 m tall that carry large leaves and a big, terminal inflorescence with strongly scented, yellow and orange flowers. Easy in cultivation, it adapts well to many temperate climates. Under cool conditions it is deciduous in winter and survives even strong freezes with copious mulching.
