🌍 India and South Asia
Easy
Crotalaria juncea, commonly known as Sunn hemp, is a fast-growing tropical legume native to India that has been cultivated since prehistoric times. Seeds have high germination rates and typically emerge within 3-14 days under warm conditions above 20°C. This species is valued as a green manure crop, cover crop, and nitrogen-fixing plant that can fix significant amounts of atmospheric nitrogen within 60-90 days.

Growing Tips
Maintain soil temperature above 20°C for optimal germination. Avoid excessive moisture during the first 2 weeks after germination, which can lead to seedling damping-off. Use cowpea-type inoculant for enhanced nitrogen fixation and root nodule development. Compress soil lightly after sowing to ensure good seed-soil contact. Seeds have a high percentage of hard seed naturally; soaking in warm water before sowing significantly improves germination rates.
