Description

This kit includes Protea acuminata seeds (5 seeds) + 01 Smoke Seed Primer Disc.

Smoke Seed Primer is ideal for treating seeds of Proteas. Many wildflower seeds are dormant and need very specific conditions for germination. The smoke seed primer solution contains a combination of natural substances that overcome dormancy and stimulate seed germination. The degree of germination success varies with the species, but on average, treated seeds give at least twice the number of seedlings that untreated seeds do. (Source: proteaseeds)

Protea acuminata, also known by the common name black-rim sugarbush, is a flowering shrub belonging to the genus Protea and the family Proteaceae. This species is endemic to South Africa, meaning it is found nowhere else in the world. It grows as an upright shrub or small tree, reaching up to two meters in height.

The plant is characterized by its linear, smooth, and flat leaves and its small flower heads. These flower heads bloom from late winter into spring, typically from June to September in the Southern Hemisphere, with a peak in July and August. While the exact pollinators are unknown, the species is monoecious, meaning each flower has both male and female parts.

The adult plants may be killed by fire, but the seeds, which are dispersed by wind, can survive and regenerate the population.

Germination Guide

🌍 South Africa (Cape Floristic Region)
Moderate

Protea acuminata, commonly known as blackrim sugarbush, is a South African endemic species that requires careful attention to moisture, temperature fluctuation, soil pH, and fungal prevention for successful seed germination. Smoke seed primer treatment is essential to break seed dormancy and improve germination rates, with seeds typically sprouting within 3-4 weeks under optimal conditions.

🌡️ Temperature alternation recommended
— Best sowing time is autumn or spring when day-night temperature difference is about 12°C. This temperature fluctuation is critical for Proteaceae germination. Ideal conditions: daytime 22-29°C, nighttime 13°C or below.

Seed Pre-treatment
  • 💧

    Soaking — 24 hours
Soak seeds in smoke-water solution (1 Smoke Seed Primer disc immersed in 50 ml water at room temperature) for 24 hours
  • 🔥

    Smoke/Fire treatment
Smoke Seed Primer disc treatment - immerse 1 disc in 50 ml room temperature water, soak seeds for 24 hours. Smoke treatment stimulates germination and overcomes seed dormancy.

    Additional notes
After smoke soaking, dip seed into fungicide solution (such as Thiram) before planting. Pre-sowing treatment increases germination percentage considerably and decreases fungus infection losses.

Substrate & Container
Recommended substrate
Well-drained acidic soil pH 5.5: 2 parts coarse river sand, 2 parts peat or decomposed pine needles, 1 part perlite or vermiculite

Recommended container
500 ml plastic seedling bag or seed trays with good drainage

Growing Tips
Keep seedlings in semi-shade with 30% shade-cloth protection during germination. Use fine rose spray for watering. Water early morning only to reduce fungal infection. Never allow seedlings to dry out at any time during germination. Use rainwater if possible, as some tap water can inhibit germination. Sterilize soil with boiling water before planting to eliminate fungal spores and pathogens. Avoid hot houses, bottom heat, or glass covers during germination. Once true leaves appear, gradually expose to full sun. Do not use chemical fertilizers - the sensitive root system of Proteaceae will be damaged. Protect seedlings from mice, birds, squirrels, and large insects with shade net or wire mesh. Transplant seedlings into larger containers only after true leaves develop, choosing cool days to minimize heat stress.
