Leucadendron salignum seeds can benefit from Seed Smoke Primer, which is also available in our shop. Make sure to take a look!
Leucadendron salignum is one of the most adaptable and widely distributed South African proteas, valued for its vibrant foliage, long-lasting ornamental bracts, and exceptional hardiness. This evergreen shrub typically reaches 1 to 2 meters in height, forming a dense, multi-stemmed structure with narrow, willow-like leaves that range from bright green to reddish tones depending on season and cultivar.
As a dioecious species, male and female plants produce distinct structures: males form showy, colorful bracts surrounding small flower heads, while females develop woody cones that hold the seeds. Seasonal color displays, especially red, yellow, and orange tones, make this species a staple in cut-flower production and landscape design.
It prefers full sun, acidic and well-drained soils, and low-phosphorus conditions typical of fynbos plants. Once established, it tolerates drought, wind, and poor soils, making it suitable for Mediterranean climates, xeric gardens, and fire-adapted landscapes. Its resilience, long flowering season, and striking foliage give Leucadendron salignum enduring ornamental value.

Moderate
Leucadendron salignum, the common sunshine conebush, is a fire-adapted evergreen shrub native to South African fynbos that produces winged seeds with thin seed coats stored in woody cones. The species requires specific temperature fluctuations and benefits from smoke pretreatment to optimize germination, which typically occurs within 21-60 days under appropriate conditions.

Growing Tips
Sow in autumn or spring when day-night temperature difference is approximately 12°C. Keep substrate consistently moist but not waterlogged to prevent seed rot. Use semi-shade conditions and protect seed trays from rodents with shade netting. Apply smoke treatment by overnight soaking or surface application before sowing. Do not use bottom heat or hot house conditions. Sterilize growing medium to reduce fungal infections. Water with fine mist and maintain adequate drainage. Do not discard non-germinated seeds immediately as dormancy may require prolonged moist conditions.
