Description
Formerly classified as a separate species, Roystone elata, the Florida Royal Palm is now considered synonymous with the Cuban Royal, R. regia. It has a stout, white marble columnlike trunk; a huge, grass green crownshaft; and a handsome crown of large, feathery leaves. The Florida Royal is said to have a somewhat taller, straighter trunk than its cuban cousin. Apparently it was once widespread in southern Florida as a wild plant but today only small populations remain protected in the Everglades and cultivated plants are possibly mixing with the Cuban Royal.
Germination Guide
General Instructions for Palms (English)
Seed pre-treatment:
Place the seeds immersed in warm water for 2 to 3 days. The water must be changed at least once every 24 hours.
Like most palm trees, seed propagation is not difficult, as long as some basic requirements are met. Among the most important are good sanitation, adequate environment, adequate hydration, and adequate heat.
About hydration and heat:
It is extremely important in the germination of the seeds "Adequate hydration". When, how and how much moisture? Excessive water can drastically decrease the germination percentage of the seeds. As important as the supply of water, it is the excessive irrigation, this can put all the work for lost. Maintaining humidity, without however soaking the substrate is extremely important.
Once the seeds start to germinate, watering should be more frequent. The substrate must not be dry.
For the seeds to germinate successfully it is necessary to keep the heat, the ideal temperature is around 26º C - 32º C.
A very efficient way for the germination of Palm trees and several other species is the following:
Place the seeds in a plastic bag (ziplock type) together with a mixture of (below I will pass 3 options in the middle): All must be just Moist, should not be soaked.
Option 1) Peat, Option 2) Peat mixed with perlite, Option 3) Sphagnum moss (Sphagnum moss). Some people also use only vermiculite, we usually use peat with perlite, but I believe that they all meet the same end. As we always find good results with this mixture, this is the one we use the most.
The bag must be checked periodically to ensure the moisture of the substrate and, once the seeds start to germinate, they must be transferred to individual pots.
You can also use plastic pots with a transparent lid, so your seed will keep the heat and humidity constant.
Your seed should not receive sun exposure in any way, only artificial lighting (fluorescent or led lamps), if necessary.
