Description
Tecoma stans is a fast and vigorous grower—a showy semi-evergreen shrub boasting brilliant clusters of bright yellow trumpet-shaped flowers. But this plant’s true power lies far beyond its sensational looks.
With an enormous natural range extending from south Texas west to Arizona and south through Mexico and Central America to South America as far as northern Argentina, as well as in southern Florida south through much of the Caribbean, Tecoma stans has been a cornerstone of indigenous medicine for centuries. It is the official flower of the United States Virgin Islands and the national flower of The Bahamas, and the name Tecoma derives from the Aztec name Tecomaxochiti, meaning “vessel flower.”
**The Herbal Medicine Marvel**
This is where Tecoma stans truly shines. In traditional Mexican medicine, it is widely used to treat hyperglycemia, gastrointestinal and urinary tract disorders, jaundice, toothaches, headaches, colds, skin infections, and scorpion, snake, and rat bites. Tea made from the inner bark is a tonic to aid in the treatment of diabetes, kidney ailments and rheumatism, with researchers naming the active ingredient tecomanine. In traditional herbal medicine, tea made from the leaves of Tecoma stans is consumed for its antidiabetic effects, and the tea may also have anti-inflammatory properties and can serve as a general health tonic. The plant contains over 120 chemical compounds, with notable therapeutic properties such as anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-bacterial effects. Imagine harvesting your own medicinal leaves from branches heavy with golden blooms—a living apothecary that feeds the soul while healing the body.
**Visual Glory**
Don’t let the medicinal focus overshadow the spectacular ornamental appeal. Clusters of large, trumpet-shaped, yellow flowers are very showy against the lance-shaped, olive-green leaves. Blooming continuously from spring to frost (all year in warm weather climates), the slightly fragrant blossoms attract hummingbirds. The flowers are followed by narrow bean-like seed pods, 8 inches long, which dangle from the shrub like Christmas ornaments and are conspicuous in the fall. They blossom in spring and summer and attract butterflies, hummingbirds and bees. Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
**Easy to Grow from Seed**
Prized for its heat and drought tolerance, as well as its spectacular floral display, Tecoma stans rewards beginner and experienced growers alike. If your garden provides full sun or limited shade and stays above about 28 degrees Fahrenheit, you should find yellow bells easy and rewarding to grow. Once established, it can handle high summer heat and drought. While Tecoma stans can grow in almost all soil types, it prefers organically rich, moderately moist, and well-drained soil. Once established, the trumpet creeper doesn’t need much maintenance. Although it thrives in neutral to slightly alkaline soil, it tolerates a wide variety of soil types, including sand and limerock. Sow the dried seeds after the end of the winter season in loose and moist fine soil to ensure quick germination.
**Your Invitation**
Tecoma stans is more than a plant—it’s a living connection to centuries of wisdom, packed into golden blooms that will transform your garden into a sanctuary of both beauty and purpose. Whether you’re drawn to the medicinal tradition or simply captivated by those luminous trumpet flowers that hummingbirds adore, growing this
