Description
Datura metel ‘White’ is a fast-growing, ornamental plant known for its large, elegant, trumpet-shaped flowers in pure white. Native to tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, this species forms a bushy, branching shrub that typically reaches 1 to 1.5 meters in height. The broad, dark green leaves provide a lush backdrop to the striking blooms, which often open in the evening and may emit a light fragrance, attracting nocturnal pollinators.
The flowers can be single or double, depending on the strain, and are followed by spiny seed capsules characteristic of the genus. This variety is widely cultivated for its dramatic appearance in gardens and containers, particularly in warm climates where it grows vigorously.
Datura metel thrives in full sun and well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It prefers warm temperatures and regular watering but can tolerate short periods of drought once established. Due to its rapid growth, occasional feeding can promote more abundant flowering.
Germination Guide
🌍 Greater Antilles and Americas, originally cultivated in the New World
Moderate
Datura metel, also known as Devil's Trumpet or Horn of Plenty, is a tender perennial from the Solanaceae family originating in the Americas. Seeds have a hard coat requiring pre-treatment such as mechanical scarification and warm or cold water soaking to improve germination rates, which typically range from 14-60 days. All parts of this plant are highly toxic and should be handled with care.

Additional notes
Combine mechanical scarification with warm water soaking for optimal results. Seeds can be placed in sealed plastic bags with moist substrate to maintain humidity after treatment
Substrate & Container
Recommended substrate
Sterile seed starting mix with vermiculite or compost layer; well-draining and fertile
Recommended container
Individual pots or trays with 3-4 seeds per pot; maintain high humidity with plastic cover or sealed bag until germination
Growing Tips
For best results, scarify seeds mechanically before soaking. Place seeds on soil surface with light covering of vermiculite; do not exclude light as it aids germination. Maintain humidity with plastic bag until sprouts emerge. Germination is erratic and can take 3-8 weeks; be patient. Transplant seedlings at 8cm height on cloudy days or with shade protection. Provide at least 6 hours of indirect sunlight indoors. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged to prevent damping off. Cold water treatment (5°C for 24 hours) shows promise for improving germination in warmer regions. Harden off seedlings gradually before transplanting outdoors after all frost danger passes. Space plants 3-4 feet apart in full sun with neutral to alkaline, well-drained, fertile soil.
