Description

This lovely vine is grown for the 6 inch, pristine white trumpet-shaped flowers that have the added bonus of having a delightful tropical fragrance. Imagine stepping into your garden on a warm evening and being greeted by waves of intoxicating sweetness—that is the glory of Beaumontia grandiflora.

Beaumontia grandiflora, commonly known as the Easter Lily Vine, is a vigorous, evergreen climber native to the eastern Himalayas and Southeast Asia. Renowned for its large, fragrant, trumpet-shaped white flowers that resemble Easter lilies, this vine blooms from late winter through early summer, often peaking around Easter. The genus is honoured to Diana Beaumont (1765-1831) from Bretton Hall, passioned collector of minerals and of exotic plants, who sent the plant to Nathaniel Wallich. Named in her honor, this vine carries the legacy of botanical passion and discovery.

What makes Beaumontia grandiflora truly extraordinary is its multi-faceted appeal to the gardener and florist alike. This woody vine is a tremendous climber which rewards the gardener with large clusters of white flowers resembling Easter Lilies, during early spring to late fall. The flowers are sweetly scented and make excellent cut flowers, which last for at least a week! Imagine harvesting armfuls of these luminous blooms for your table, their fragrance filling your home—each flower lasting through an entire week of enjoyment. Attracts bees and butterflies making it an excellent addition to pollinator gardens. Beyond the cut flower trade, this vine becomes a living magnet for pollinators, turning your garden into a vibrant ecosystem. In addition to its beauty and aroma, Easter Lily Vine can create a fragrant privacy fence of virtually unlimited size! A single vine can be trained to cover 30+ feet, transforming a utilitarian fence into a botanical statement and fragrant sanctuary.

Huge, glossy, dark green leaves showcase lily-like blooms on a 10-20 foot woody vine in full to part sun and moist, well drained soil. Growing Beaumontia grandiflora from seed is entirely manageable: Soak seed 4 hours before sowing in moist, well draining potting mix. Plant ¾ inches deep, keep at 69-73 F. and bright light. Germinates in 10-28 days. Once established, Easter Lily Vine’s growth rate is moderate, so it doesn’t require constant pruning to keep under control like other vigorous vines. The soil for Beaumontia grandiflora should be well-draining and rich in organic matter. A loamy soil mix is ideal, as it retains moisture while allowing excess water to drain away. The flowers are fragrant in close proximity. Provide full sun to partial shade, water consistently during the growing season, and feed monthly with a bloom-boosting fertilizer. While it thrives in warm, humid climates and is relatively low-maintenance, it requires sturdy support due to its substantial size and weight.

There is something profoundly satisfying about nurturing a vine from seed—watching it climb, then suddenly burst into those massive, pristine white trumpets that fill the air with their perfume. Hidden among rocks and trees in forests from China to the East Indies is Beaumontia grandiflora, an evergreen climbing vine full of life and energy that has been found to grow in elevations of up to 5,000 feet. Bring that Himalayan vigor into your own garden. Whether you dream of a fragrant privacy screen, a trellis ablaze with Easter lily–like blooms, or armfuls of cut flowers for your home, this vine delivers on every level. Start your seeds now—and next spring, become the gardener with the most magnificent, fragrant vine on the block.

Seed tray or small pots (3 inch pots recommended) with clear plastic cover or sealed polythene bag

Growing Tips
Sow seeds in early spring on the surface of moist seed compost and lightly press into soil. Scarify seeds before soaking for best results. Cover tray with clear plastic to maintain constant humidity and provide bright, indirect light at 20-25°C (68-77°F). Ensure soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Remove cover once seedlings emerge and gradually acclimate to outdoor conditions. Use artificial lighting if natural light is insufficient. Transplant seedlings to small pots when large enough to handle and grow on in warm conditions before planting outdoors in early summer.
