Usually grows up to 2 meters in height, but in ideal conditions it can reach up to 10 meters in height.

The species is native to the humid forests of western central Africa, where temperatures generally fluctuate above 20 ° C, and often reach up to 40 ° C, it grows in areas of tropical forest, swampy soils or wet savannas; blooms and bears fruit throughout the year.

Tabernanthe i. is the plant that has at its root the active principle, a precursor of debates, initiatives, controversies in the current world. It is believed to be able to antagonize and cancel the action of a series of alkaloids of intense bioactivity on the brain

Excerpt from the article written by bia labate:
Today is used by traditional healers in the countries of the Congo basin and in the religion of Bouiti in Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon and above all in Gabon, where important members of the country’s political and military hierarchies are adepts. The root bark is mainly used but medicinal properties are also attributed to the leaves, the trunk bark and the root. In the gabon, the root and the root bark are easily found in traditional pharmacies and in the markets of major cities. There is an NGO dedicated entirely. If the current trend is maintained, the collection of wild species is putting it at risk of extinction.

Germination Guide

🌍 West Central Africa, primarily Gabon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Cameroon, and Angola
Difficult

Tabernanthe iboga is an evergreen rainforest shrub native to the tropical rainforests of West Central Africa, particularly Gabon, Congo, and Cameroon. Seeds require warmth and consistent moisture for germination, which typically occurs between 2-8 weeks under optimal conditions. This species presents significant germination challenges due to seed perishability and strict environmental requirements.

Seed Pre-treatment
  • 💧

    Soaking — 24 hours
Pre-soak seeds in warm water (below 40°C) for 24 hours to improve germination and seed activation
  • 🔨

    Mechanical scarification
Scarify seeds carefully to improve germination rates; pre-soaking in warm water for 24 hours is beneficial
  • ❄️

    Cold stratification — 14 days at 10°C
  • 📋

    Additional notes
Seeds are very perishable with short viability; store in moist environment at 10°C to maintain viability for about 4 months. Fresh seeds germinate more readily than older seeds whose seed coat has dried

Substrate & Container
Recommended substrate
Well-draining mix: peat with perlite (60/40), vermiculite, sphagnum moss, or coco peat. Avoid waterlogging; add coarse sand for drainage

Recommended container
Seed trays or individual pots with drainage holes

Growing Tips
Keep moisture constant without waterlogging. Maintain warm, humid conditions (30-35°C for optimal germination; lower temperatures increase fungal risk). Transfer seedlings to individual pots after 3 sets of true leaves. Do not expose seedlings to dry air until they have at least 3 sets of leaves. First fertilization when seedlings have 5 pairs of leaves using minimal fertilizer. Initial potting medium should be 90% coarse sand plus 10% good potting mix without manure. Use fresh seeds sourced from reputable suppliers within 3 weeks of harvest for best results. Handle seed coat very carefully during germination to avoid damage.
