Description
Dalbergia nigra is a majestic deciduous tree native to the Atlantic Forest of eastern Brazil, renowned for producing one of the world’s most valuable and beautifully figured hardwoods. Growing 15 to 30 meters in height, it develops a straight trunk and a broad, rounded canopy with elegant pinnate leaves composed of numerous glossy green leaflets. Due to its exceptional timber quality and historical overharvesting, the species is now protected and highly valued in conservation and reforestation efforts.
During the flowering season, the tree produces abundant clusters of small, fragrant white to pale cream flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. These are followed by flat, papery seed pods containing one to three seeds. The richly colored heartwood, displaying shades of dark brown, purple, and black with dramatic grain patterns, has long been prized for fine furniture, cabinetry, decorative veneers, and premium musical instruments.
Dalbergia nigra thrives in warm, humid tropical and subtropical climates. It performs best in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As a nitrogen-fixing member of the legume family, it contributes to soil health and establishes well in restoration projects. Once established, it shows moderate tolerance to seasonal drought.

Growing Tips
Use fresh, mature seeds whenever possible for best results. For stored seeds, scarify by soaking in hot water (nearly boiling) for 24 hours, then soak in warm water for 12-24 hours before planting. Vermiculite substrate reduces germination time compared to other substrates. Maintain consistent moisture without waterlogging. Seedlings develop slowly and require 6-7 months to reach transplant size. Ensure seeds come from legal, sustainable sources as this species is CITES Appendix I protected. Light treatment with indirect sunlight promotes germination.
