Description

This kit includes Protea neriifolia seeds (10 seeds) + 01 Smoke Seed Primer Disc.

Smoke Seed Primer is ideal for treating seeds of Proteas. Many wildflower seeds are dormant and need very specific conditions for germination. The smoke seed primer solution contains a combination of natural substances that overcome dormancy and stimulate seed germination. The degree of germination success varies with the species, but on average, treated seeds give at least twice the number of seedlings that untreated seeds do. (Source: proteaseeds)

Protea acuminata, also known by the common name black-rim sugarbush, is a flowering shrub belonging to the genus Protea and the family Proteaceae. This species is endemic to South Africa, meaning it is found nowhere else in the world. It grows as an upright shrub or small tree, reaching up to two meters in height.

The plant is characterized by its linear, smooth, and flat leaves and its small flower heads. These flower heads bloom from late winter into spring, typically from June to September in the Southern Hemisphere, with a peak in July and August. While the exact pollinators are unknown, the species is monoecious, meaning each flower has both male and female parts.

The adult plants may be killed by fire, but the seeds, which are dispersed by wind, can survive and regenerate the population.

Moderate

Protea neriifolia, also known as oleander-leaf protea or narrow-leaf sugarbush, is an endemic South African flowering shrub prized for its magnificent pink, orange, or cream flowers with distinctive hairy black margins. Pre-sowing smoke treatment with Smoke Seed Primer significantly increases germination rates by overcoming natural seed dormancy and can double the number of viable seedlings compared to untreated seeds.

Seed Pre-treatment
  • 💧

    Soaking — 24 hours
Soak seeds in smoke-water solution for 24 hours after immersing one Smoke Seed Primer disc in 50ml water at room temperature
  • 🔥

    Smoke/Fire treatment
Smoke Seed Primer disc treatment - one disc sufficient for approximately 100 seeds. Smoke primer contains natural germination stimulators that overcome dormancy and increase germination success by at least twice compared to untreated seeds
  • 📋

    Additional notes
After smoke-water soaking, dip seed into fungicide solution such as Thiram before planting. Do not use boiling water to sterilize soil if using Smoke Seed Primer, as this may reduce effectiveness

Substrate & Container
Recommended substrate
Acidic mixture: 2 parts coarse river sand, 2 parts peat or decomposed pine needles, 1 part vermiculite or perlite - pH 5.5-6.0

Recommended container
500 ml plastic seedling bags or individual pots to protect roots during transplanting

Growing Tips
Keep seedlings in semi-shade with 30% shade-cloth protection from pests and intense sun. Water with fine rose spray using rainwater preferred; avoid tap water with alkaline, brackish, or high salt content. Do not allow substrate to dry out during germination. Once true leaves appear after cotyledons, gradually expose to full sun. Continue daily early-morning watering, allowing surface to dry by evening to prevent fungal infection. Maintain temperature fluctuation between day and night for optimal results. Seeds sown in autumn will strengthen before summer heat; those in spring will benefit from longer growing season in cooler climates.
