Description
This kit includes Protea neriifolia seeds (5 seeds) + 01 Smoke Seed Primer Disc.
Smoke Seed Primer is ideal for treating seeds of Proteas. Many wildflower seeds are dormant and need very specific conditions for germination. The smoke seed primer solution contains a combination of natural substances that overcome dormancy and stimulate seed germination. The degree of germination success varies with the species, but on average, treated seeds give at least twice the number of seedlings that untreated seeds do. (Source: proteaseeds)
Protea acuminata, also known by the common name black-rim sugarbush, is a flowering shrub belonging to the genus Protea and the family Proteaceae. This species is endemic to South Africa, meaning it is found nowhere else in the world. It grows as an upright shrub or small tree, reaching up to two meters in height.
The plant is characterized by its linear, smooth, and flat leaves and its small flower heads. These flower heads bloom from late winter into spring, typically from June to September in the Southern Hemisphere, with a peak in July and August. While the exact pollinators are unknown, the species is monoecious, meaning each flower has both male and female parts.
The adult plants may be killed by fire, but the seeds, which are dispersed by wind, can survive and regenerate the population.
Germination Guide
🌍 South Africa (Cape Region)
Moderate
Protea neriifolia (Oleander-leaf Protea) is a South African broadleaf evergreen shrub producing distinctive pink and orange flowers with black-tipped bracts. Seeds are dormant and require smoke-priming treatment along with careful moisture management for successful germination within 1-3 months. This species is considered one of the easier proteas to grow once established, though seedling care demands attention to fungal prevention and proper watering protocols.
Germination

Expect germination in
21 – 90 days
Temperature
Min 13°C
Ideal 22°C
Max 29°C
🌡️ Temperature alternation recommended
— Best germination occurs with temperature difference of approximately 12°C between day and night. Optimal sowing times are autumn or spring when natural temperature fluctuations are greatest

Seed Pre-treatment
-
💧
Soaking — 24 hours
Soak seeds in smoke-water solution prepared from one Smoke Seed Primer disc dissolved in 50ml water at room temperature for 24 hours
-
🔥
Smoke/Fire treatment
Dissolve one Smoke Seed Primer disc in 50ml water at room temperature (sufficient to treat up to 100 seeds). Smoke primer breaks seed dormancy and increases germination rates by approximately 50-100% compared to untreated seeds. After soaking, dip seeds into fungicide solution such as Thiram before planting

Additional notes
Smoke-priming significantly increases germination percentage and reduces losses due to fungal infections. This species responds well to smoke treatment, which simulates post-fire conditions that trigger natural germination
Substrate & Container
Recommended substrate
2 parts coarse river sand, 2 parts peat or decomposed pine needles, 1 part vermiculite or perlite. Slightly acidic soil mixture with pH 5.5. Must be well-drained and sterilized
Recommended container
500ml plastic seedling bag (one seed per container recommended for best results)
Growing Tips
Maintain seedlings in semi-shade with 30% shade-cloth protection during germination phase. Water daily with fine rose spray using rainwater or pH-tested water if possible; allow to dry before evening to prevent fungal infection. Protect from mice, birds, squirrels and large insects using mesh enclosures. Do not allow soil to dry out during germination. Once true leaves appear, gradually expose to full sun. Avoid hot-houses and bottom heat. Keep seedlings on wire mesh suspended off ground for better air circulation. Water early morning is preferred. Temperature stability is less critical than temperature oscillation between day and night.
