Moderate
Duranta erecta, commonly known as Golden Dewdrop or Skyflower, is a tropical ornamental shrub native to the Americas, prized for its vibrant violet-blue flowers and golden berries. Germination is relatively slow and can be variable, requiring warm temperatures and consistent moisture. With proper pre-treatment and attention to growing conditions, seeds can germinate within 2-8 weeks.

Seed Pre-treatment
-
💧
Soaking — 24 hours
Soak seeds in warm water for approximately 24 hours to soften the seed coat and rehydrate the embryo.
-
🔨
Mechanical scarification
Gently nick or scratch the seed coat with a small file or sandpaper to improve water absorption and germination rates. Be careful not to damage the embryo.

Additional notes
Seeds benefit from scarification and soaking. Duranta erecta seeds have a hard seed coat that inhibits germination. Pre-treatment is recommended to enhance germination rates.
Substrate & Container
Recommended substrate
Well-draining seed-starting mix such as equal parts peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite, or potting soil combined with sand or perlite
Recommended container
Seed trays or small pots with individual cells recommended for easier transplanting
Growing Tips
Place seed trays in a warm location (21-25°C) with bright light or under fluorescent grow lights providing 12-14 hours daily. Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged to prevent seed rot. Once seedlings emerge, they require abundant sunlight and should be kept in a warm environment. A heat mat can maintain consistent temperatures indoors. Provide well-draining soil to prevent fungal diseases. Seedlings are sensitive to overwatering; allow the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings.
