Dracaena draco subsp. draco is a striking, slow-growing, evergreen tree native to the Canary Islands, renowned for its sculptural form and legendary red resin known as “dragon’s blood.” It develops a thick, smooth, grey trunk that gradually branches into an umbrella-like canopy of stiff, sword-shaped blue-green leaves. Mature specimens can reach 10 to 15 meters in height and live for centuries. In late spring to summer, it produces clusters of small greenish-white flowers, followed by orange-red berries. The tree thrives in full sun and well-drained, sandy soils, showing excellent drought and wind tolerance once established. Ideal for dry, coastal, or Mediterranean gardens, it adds an exotic, architectural focal point to landscapes.
