Difficult
Elettaria cardamomum is a tropical evergreen perennial in the ginger family, native to southern India and Sri Lanka, and known as the Queen of Spices. Germination is characteristically slow and variable, taking 2-12 weeks depending on seed freshness and environmental conditions. Success requires maintaining consistent warmth, high humidity, and using only fresh seed, as dried seed loses viability rapidly.

Additional notes
Soak fresh seeds in water for 24 hours before sowing; use only fresh seed as dried seed loses viability quickly (1-year-old seed may have less than 10% germination)
Substrate & Container
Recommended substrate
Sandy loam with coco peat and compost mix, or seed starting mix with added perlite or sand; well-draining but moisture-retaining
Recommended container
Shallow tray, pot, or propagator with drainage holes; cover with plastic wrap or lid to maintain moisture
Growing Tips
Use only fresh seeds extracted from recently opened pods for best results. Maintain soil evenly moist but not waterlogged to prevent mold and fungal diseases. Provide temperatures of 20-30°C (68-86°F) for optimal germination; temperatures below 20°C significantly slow or inhibit germination. Avoid direct sunlight; bright, indirect light is sufficient until seedlings emerge. Ventilate propagator occasionally to prevent fungal growth. Once seedlings reach 4-6 inches (10 cm) tall, gradually acclimate them to open air and lower humidity before transplanting. Avoid disturbing seedlings during transplanting as cardamom is sensitive to root disturbance. Keep humidity high (70-80%) around developing seedlings.
