Description

This kit includes Protea scolymocephala seeds (5 seeds) + 01 Smoke Seed Primer Disc.

Smoke Seed Primer is ideal for treating seeds of Proteas. Many wildflower seeds are dormant and need very specific conditions for germination. The smoke seed primer solution contains a combination of natural substances that overcome dormancy and stimulate seed germination. The degree of germination success varies with the species, but on average, treated seeds give at least twice the number of seedlings that untreated seeds do. (Source: proteaseeds)

Protea acuminata, also known by the common name black-rim sugarbush, is a flowering shrub belonging to the genus Protea and the family Proteaceae. This species is endemic to South Africa, meaning it is found nowhere else in the world. It grows as an upright shrub or small tree, reaching up to two meters in height.

The plant is characterized by its linear, smooth, and flat leaves and its small flower heads. These flower heads bloom from late winter into spring, typically from June to September in the Southern Hemisphere, with a peak in July and August. While the exact pollinators are unknown, the species is monoecious, meaning each flower has both male and female parts.

The adult plants may be killed by fire, but the seeds, which are dispersed by wind, can survive and regenerate the population.

Moderate

Protea scolymocephala, commonly known as thistle protea or thistle sugarbush, is a small, compact shrub endemic to coastal sandy flats of South Africa's Western Cape. As a serotinous species adapted to fire-prone fynbos ecosystems, its seeds are stimulated to germinate by smoke exposure, a natural adaptation that makes smoke primer treatment essential for successful seed propagation. This moderately difficult species germinates in 30-60 days when provided with proper smoke treatment, temperature fluctuation, acidic well-drained soil, and cool, moist conditions.

Seed Pre-treatment
  • 💧

    Soaking — 24 hours
Soak seeds in smoke-water solution prepared by dissolving 1 Smoke Seed Primer disc in 50ml water for 24 hours before sowing
  • 🔥

    Smoke/Fire treatment
Smoke treatment is essential for breaking seed dormancy; increases germination rates and reduces fungal losses; seeds respond to smoke chemicals that naturally trigger germination after fire in fynbos habitat
  • 📋

    Additional notes
After smoke soaking, treat seeds with fungicide (Thiram or equivalent) and allow to dry before sowing to prevent damping off and fungal infections

Substrate & Container
Recommended substrate
Well-drained acidic soil (pH 5.5): 2 parts peat or decomposed pine needles, 2 parts coarse river sand, 1 part perlite or vermiculite; must be sterilized to prevent fungal infections

Recommended container
500ml plastic seedling bags or seed trays with drainage

Growing Tips
Keep seed trays in semi-shade with approximately 30% shade cloth protection. Water with fine spray using preferably rainwater or boiled-then-cooled water (stored rainwater contains pathogens). Maintain constant moisture without waterlogging. Mist daily to maintain high humidity. Do not use bottom heat or hot house conditions—cool nights and warm days are critical. Protect seedlings from mice, birds, squirrels, and insects with shade cloth or mesh. Once first true leaves appear, expose to full sun and move to individual 500ml containers. Water early morning to reduce fungal infection risk. Never fertilize seedlings as Proteaceae are sensitive to high nutrient levels, particularly phosphorus. Seedlings should be transplanted when first pair of true leaves develops. First flowers can be expected in the second year. Keep growing medium moist but never waterlogged.
