Description

Viola odorata is a charming perennial herbaceous plant native to Europe and parts of western Asia, widely cultivated for its fragrant flowers and ornamental value. The plant forms low-growing clumps 10 to 5 cm tall with heart-shaped, dark green leaves that spread gradually through short runners. In late winter to early spring, it produces small but highly fragrant flowers, most commonly deep violet to purple, though white and pale forms also exist.

Sweet violet thrives in partial shade and moist, fertile, well-drained soils rich in organic matter. It is often grown in woodland gardens, borders, and shaded areas where it can naturalize easily. The flowers have historically been used in perfumery, confectionery, and traditional herbal preparations.

Sow seeds in late summer to autumn for natural cold stratification, which improves germination. Seeds can also be sown in early spring after a period of cold stratification in the refrigerator for several weeks. Cool temperatures and consistent moisture help promote successful germination.

Moderate

Viola odorata, commonly known as sweet violet, is a fragrant perennial herb native to Europe, Western Asia, and northwest Africa. Seeds require extended cold stratification of 4-6 weeks to break dormancy and germinate successfully. Germination is often erratic and slow, typically occurring 3-8 weeks after the cold period ends.

    Additional notes
Cold stratification is required to break dormancy. Mix seeds with damp sand or vermiculite, seal in plastic bag, and refrigerate at 35-40°F for 4-6 weeks. Seeds must not be frozen or kept in excessively wet conditions.

Growing Tips
Sow seeds shallowly (1/8 inch deep) in darkness. After cold stratification, move seedlings to cool conditions (65-75°F) for germination. Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged or soggy. Germination begins in refrigerator but accelerates when moved to warmer conditions. Do not discard moldy seeds—they may still germinate. Consider winter sowing outdoors as natural stratification alternative.
