Description
Jiaogulan is a perennial creek, originating south china, south korea, south japan and northern thailand. More known as a herbal medicine, powerful antioxidant with adaptogenic effects.
This plant has been and is used by the people of the mountains of southern china and north of vietnam, as a herb for longevity and it is regularly consumed of its infusion, in the form of tea.
The laboratory and clinical tests have proven the qualities as an antioxidant, reducing cholesterol in the blood, particularly the “bad cholesterou”. Also has been observed in the studies, which increases t-lymphocyte activity and may act as tumor inhibitor.
In scientific studies, more than 80 different saponins, the same substance that is the active ingredient in ginseng and has a significant reduction in cholesterol, well over the grape and red wine. While some of the saponins are similar to those found in ginseng, gynostemma pentaphyllum is almost four times more and that potentially becomes a much more powerful herb.

Gynostemma pentaphyllum, commonly known as jiaogulan or immortality herb, is a dioecious herbaceous climbing vine from the Cucurbitaceae family native to mountainous regions of Asia. The species exhibits seed dormancy requiring specific pre-treatment protocols. Germination is typically slow and erratic, ranging from 14 to 42 days under optimal warm conditions following cold stratification.

Additional notes
Seeds exhibit dormancy. Short-term cold stratification (5-10 days at 5-10°C) followed by warm germination conditions (15-25°C) is effective. GA4 hormone treatment can enhance germination rate for dormant seeds
Substrate & Container
Recommended substrate
Seed-starting mix (peat-based or mixture of vermiculite, perlite, topsoil, and potting soil)
Recommended container
Seedling pots or trays; peat pots recommended for minimal root disturbance
Growing Tips
Keep substrate moist but not soggy; germination is inconsistent, so plant 2-3 seeds per pot about 1 inch apart. Use seedling trays filled with loose, airy substrate (mineral-organic mixture). Seeds are easily damaged and must be handled with care. Provide light after germination but seeds can germinate in darkness. Grow lights (12+ hours/day) or partial sunlight accelerates seedling development. Maintain temperature around 21-22°C for optimal germination. Both male and female plants are required for seed production. Seedlings appreciate well-drained, humus-rich soil and consistent moisture during establishment.
