Description

The banana pepper (also known as the yellow wax pepper or banana chili) is a medium-sized member of the chili pepper family that has a mild, tangy taste. While typically bright yellow, it is possible for them to change to green, red, or orange as they ripen. It is often pickled, stuffed or used as a raw ingredient in foods. It is a cultivar of the species Capsicum annuum. Its flavor is not very hot (0–500 Scoville units) and, as is the case with most peppers, its heat depends on the maturity of the pepper, with the ripest being sweeter than younger ones.

Germination Guide

🌍 South America (Northern South America and Southwestern North America)
Easy

Capsicum annuum is a flowering plant native to South America, widely cultivated for its diverse peppers ranging from mild bell peppers to hot chili varieties. Seeds germinate best in warm conditions (75-90°F or 24-32°C) and require consistent moisture but benefit from high light conditions after sprouting. This species is generally easy to grow from seed when warm temperatures are maintained, making it an excellent choice for home gardeners.

Growing Tips
Sow seeds 1/16 inch deep and tamp soil firmly. Use bottom heat or heating mat set to 80-90°F for faster germination. Keep soil moist but not waterlogged. Seeds do not require light during germination but need bright light immediately after sprouting. Provide 6-18 hours of light daily once seedlings emerge. Use coir-based or neutral pH seed starting mix instead of acidic peat moss for better results. Soaking seeds overnight in warm water can accelerate germination. Be patient - germination typically takes 7-21 days but can extend to 40 days for some varieties. Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before last frost date.
