Jacaratia mexicana ‘Maroon’ is a rare selection of the Mexican tree papaya, distinguished by its striking maroon to burgundy new growth and ornamental appeal. Native to Mexico and Central America, this fast-growing, deciduous tree typically reaches 6 to 12 meters in height, developing a straight, lightly spiny trunk that stores water and supports a sparse canopy of large, deeply lobed leaves. The colorful emerging foliage gradually matures to green, creating an attractive contrast throughout the growing season.

Small, creamy-white to greenish flowers are produced on mature trees, followed by elongated, yellow to orange fruits with sweet, aromatic flesh. The fruits are edible and are consumed fresh or used in preserves and beverages in their native range. Like other members of the Caricaceae, the plant produces a milky latex and is generally dioecious, with male and female flowers borne on separate trees.
