Description
It grows like a shrub, reaching the height between 1.50 and 1.70 cm. Belonging to the same tomato family, it is commercially grown in madhya pradesh (a province of india).
Ashwaganda in Sanskrit means horse scent: suggesting that it provides “the strength of a stallion”. Its use in ayurvedic medicine is traditional as aphrodisiac, memory loss.
Japanese and American companies filed applications for patents on formulations containing the herb extract.
England has received the patent for product associated with the treatment of arthritis ..
In Brazil, scientific studies were done for diseases such as cancer from the species.
Its cultivation is done through seeds, extremely easy, adapts to any type of climate. Originating in dry climates, it can be planted in any type of soil. Its roots are harvested in the dry period of the year (August and September).
Germination Guide
🌍 India, Middle East, North Africa, and southern Europe
Easy
Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) is a warm-loving evergreen shrub native to India, the Middle East, and North Africa, thriving in warm, dry conditions. Seeds are light-dependent and temperature-sensitive, requiring constant warmth (preferably 25°C) and bright indirect light for optimal germination. The species exhibits remarkable germination variation among different cultivars, with rates ranging from 40-98% depending on seed source and pretreatment methods.

🌡️ Temperature alternation recommended
— Alternating temperatures of 15/35°C (day/night) achieve highest germination at 92% with good seedling vigor. However, constant light is required with alternating temperatures.

Soaking — 24 hours
Soak seeds in room-temperature water for 12 to 24 hours before sowing. This softens the seed coat and accelerates germination.
-
🔨
Mechanical scarification
Mechanical scarification can improve germination, achieving 65-67% germination at 25°C. Alternative cost-effective method to break seed dormancy.

Additional notes
Mechanical scarification or water soaking (12-24 hours) both improve germination. Gibberellic acid (GA3) at 500 µg/ml for 24 hours can enhance germination percentage significantly.
Substrate & Container
Recommended substrate
Sandy loam with compost, light, well-draining potting soil mix. Can include perlite for improved drainage.
Recommended container
Individual pots or flats. Seeds germinate similarly to pepper and tomato seeds.
Growing Tips
Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged—overwatering is the primary cause of seedling failure. Place seeds in a warm location (21-32°C) with bright, indirect light; direct intense heat can inhibit germination. Provide 16 hours light/8 hours dark photoperiod for best results. Seedlings are frost-sensitive; start indoors 8-12 weeks before the last frost. Once seedlings reach 5-10 cm tall, thin or transplant to individual pots. Space plants 10 cm apart for optimal growth. Ashwagandha seeds may germinate erratically; patience is required—germination can continue sporadically over several weeks. Use mechanical scarification or gibberellic acid treatment if experiencing poor germination. Maintain warm soil temperature throughout germination period; cool nights significantly inhibit germination rates.
