Description

This magnificent tree reaches 15 to 20 meters, recognized for its spreading crown, rough grey bark, and clusters of small yellowish flowers appearing in spherical heads. Native to South and Southeast Asia, it thrives in mixed deciduous forests and hilly regions. Meet Haldina cordifolia—a tree whose bark holds centuries of healing wisdom.

Its trunk is rough, cracked and exudes a yellow wood-dye when cut—hence the Sanskrit name Haridru, meaning “yellow tree.” The cordate (heart-shaped) leaf base gives the species its name cordifolia and is a distinctive identification feature. Small, fragrant pale yellow flowers bloom during rainy season, followed by orange-red drupes. The visual architecture alone commands respect—but it’s what lives inside the bark that makes this tree truly precious.

This is your personal apothecary in tree form. Haldina cordifolia is an Ayurvedic medicinal plant used for treating skin diseases, wounds, vomiting, intestinal worms, indigestion and liver diseases. For centuries, the primary medicinal use in Ayurveda has been supporting metabolic health, most notably in managing blood sugar. The bark is tonic, vulnerary and aphrodisiac; it cures inflammations, biliousness and skin diseases. Active compounds documented include bark-derived alkaloids (e.g., haldine), flavonoids, tannins, and saponins, which contribute to its therapeutic actions. The heartwood contains indole alkaloid; the bark contains about 7.5% to 9.5% tannin. No expensive supplements—just strip bark from your own living medicine cabinet. Bonus: bees produce excellent honey from the abundant nectar; the tree is valued for apiculture. Imagine harvesting both traditional Ayurvedic remedies and raw honey from your garden.

It grows best where annual daytime temperatures are within 25–35°C, but tolerates 5–47°C. What makes Haldu special is its ability to thrive in various soil types and its resilience to drought conditions. Suitable soil pH is between 5.5 to 6.5. Young trees can grow 1–2 meters annually under good conditions, reaching harvestable timber size in 25–35 years. Haldina cordifolia thrives in tropical and subtropical climates. This is a tree that rewards patience with decades of utility—medicinal harvests begin within years, not generations.

Grow a living bridge to ancient healing traditions. When you plant Haldina cordifolia from seed, you’re not just growing a tree—you’re cultivating your own forever-pharmacy, your garden’s honey factory, and a living legacy of South Asian botanical wisdom. Every leaf, every flower, every ring of growth brings you closer to understanding why this tree has been treasured in forests for millennia. Start from seed. Watch it become the most purposeful tree in your garden.

Difficult

Haldina cordifolia (syn. Adina cordifolia) is a multipurpose deciduous tree species native to southern Asia. The tree has very poor natural regeneration due to its small, winged seeds which leads to low germination and establishment percentages. Seed treatment with cold water soaking improves germination rates.

Growing Tips
Sow seeds in a seed-box placed in light shade and protected from heavy rain. Water frequently but carefully with a very fine spray. Seedlings ready for transplanting in about 2-3 months. Keep soil moist. Transplanting risk is high due to drought sensitivity; maintain soil ball around roots. Use baskets or bamboo tubes instead of open beds to avoid root disturbance during transplanting.
