Easy
Bauhinia variegata, commonly known as the Orchid tree or Mountain ebony, is a semi-deciduous tree native to Southeast Asia, prized for its striking orchid-like flowers in shades of pink, purple, and white. Seeds have a hard outer coating but germinate readily with basic hot water treatment and warm temperatures. This species exhibits epigeal germination with good viability when fresh.

Seed Pre-treatment
-
💧
Soaking — 24 hours
Submerge seeds in hot tap water and leave to soak for 24 hours. Seeds will swell if viable; re-treat those that have not swollen.

🔨
Hot water scarification
Submerge seeds in hot tap water and leave to soak for 24 hours. Any seeds that have not swollen should be placed in fresh hot water and soaked again. If hot water does not allow seed to imbibe, nick the seed carefully with a blade and soak again in warm water.

Additional notes
Hot water treatment significantly reduces germination time though is not critical for seed viability.
Substrate & Container
Recommended substrate
Well-draining potting compost or seed raising mix with sand or perlite
Recommended container
Individual modules, small pots, or trays with drainage holes
Growing Tips
Sow seeds immediately after soaking or up to 1 cm deep in well-draining soil; maintain substrate moisture but avoid waterlogging. Germination typically occurs within 4-6 weeks at optimal temperatures but may take up to 90 days—patience is essential. Use fresh seeds when possible for best results. Once germinated, transplant seedlings into larger containers or root trainers to avoid damaging the sensitive tap root. Place in warm, partially shaded location to prevent drying out during the seedling stage. Yellow-colored, large seeds produce superior growth compared to brown or small seeds.
