Description
Agave ovatifolia ‘Giant’ is a striking, architectural succulent prized for its large, symmetrical rosette of broad, bluish-gray leaves with gently scalloped edges. This cultivar is notably larger than the typical form, often reaching 1.2 to 1.5 meters tall and up to 2 meters wide at maturity. Extremely drought-tolerant and low-maintenance, it thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it ideal for xeriscaping and desert-style landscapes. Hardy to light frost, it provides year-round structure and visual impact. Like other agaves, it is monocarpic, flowering once late in life with an impressive tall bloom stalk.

Easy
Agave ovatifolia 'Giant' is a remarkable cold-hardy cultivar from high-altitude mountain canyons in northeastern Mexico, distinctly larger than the species type with prominent black spines and superior cold tolerance. This rare giant form is notable for exceptional hardiness to both freezing temperatures and cold-wet climates, making it the most suitable Agave for temperate regions. Seed germination is straightforward and relatively rapid, typically occurring within 4-14 days at warm temperatures.

Growing Tips
Ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot; use well-draining substrate. Keep substrate moist but not waterlogged during germination. Remove seeds from high humidity after sprouting. Light requirements: provide bright, indirect light; full light after seedlings emerge. Maintain temperatures between 22-30°C, ideally 25°C. Once established, gradually introduce seedlings to full sunlight over several weeks. Transplant into individual pots when seedlings develop 2-3 leaves. These are slow-growing plants; 1-year-old seedlings may be only 1-1.5 inches wide. Avoid fertilizing young seedlings.
