Description
Viola odorata is a charming perennial herbaceous plant native to Europe and parts of western Asia, widely cultivated for its fragrant flowers and ornamental value. The plant forms low-growing clumps 10 to 5 cm tall with heart-shaped, dark green leaves that spread gradually through short runners. In late winter to early spring, it produces small but highly fragrant flowers, most commonly deep violet to purple, though white and pale forms also exist.
Sweet violet thrives in partial shade and moist, fertile, well-drained soils rich in organic matter. It is often grown in woodland gardens, borders, and shaded areas where it can naturalize easily. The flowers have historically been used in perfumery, confectionery, and traditional herbal preparations.
Sow seeds in late summer to autumn for natural cold stratification, which improves germination. Seeds can also be sown in early spring after a period of cold stratification in the refrigerator for several weeks. Cool temperatures and consistent moisture help promote successful germination.
