Description
A dry deciduous large shrub or small tree to about 8 m tall with thick branches, large, oblong leaves and masses of heavily scented, pink to white, orange and yellow flowers in terminal clusters throughout most of the year. Plumeria rubra is originally native to Mexico and Central America but is widely cultivated in the tropics and in warm temperate climates. It is one of the most desirable flowering shrubs or trees and there are hundreds of named cultivars, which unfortunately do not come true from seeds, only from cuttings or grafts.

Difficult
Plumeria rubra, commonly known as red frangipani or red plumeria, is a tropical deciduous tree native to Mexico and Central America, prized for its intensely fragrant flowers. Seed germination is variable and requires consistent warmth and moisture, with successful germination typically occurring within 7-14 days under optimal conditions but sometimes extending to 30 days when conditions are suboptimal.

Seed Pre-treatment
-
💧
Soaking — 8 hours
Soak in warm (not hot) water for 8 hours to overnight. Most seeds will swell when soaked; viable seeds sink to the bottom, non-viable ones float. Soaking softens the seed coat and tests viability.

🔨
Mechanical scarification
Gently rub seeds with sandpaper or lightly scrape with a blade to break the outer layer. Mechanical scarification is optional but can improve germination.

Additional notes
Soaking in warm water is the primary pre-treatment method. Viable seeds can be identified by sinking in water after soaking.
Substrate & Container
Recommended substrate
well-draining seed starting mix with peat, perlite or sand to promote aeration and prevent waterlogging
Recommended container
small pots or seed trays with drainage holes
Growing Tips
Maintain soil temperature between 75-95°F (24-35°C) for fastest germination at 85°F. Use a heat mat to sustain warm temperatures. Keep soil moist but never waterlogged to prevent damping off and root rot. Ensure excellent air circulation and use sterile seed mix. Seeds do not need light to germinate but seedlings require bright, indirect light once they emerge. Remove plastic covers once seedlings appear to prevent fungal disease. Fresh seeds have significantly better germination rates than old seeds. Do not soak seeds for longer than overnight as this can damage them.
