Tacca chantrieri is an exotic perennial from Southeast Asia, famous for its unusual deep purple to nearly black flowers that resemble bat wings, complete with long whisker-like bracts. It thrives in warm, humid, shaded environments and is often grown as a striking ornamental for its dramatic, tropical appearance.

Tacca nivea, closely related to Tacca chantrieri, is prized for its large, white bat-shaped blooms with delicate trailing bracts. Native to tropical regions of Asia, it prefers similar conditions, high humidity, warmth, and indirect light, making it a rare and eye-catching choice for collectors of unusual plants.

Germination Guide

🌍 Southeast Asia including Thailand, Malaysia, southern China, and tropical regions of Asia
Very Difficult

The Bat Flower (Tacca) is an exotic tropical perennial native to Southeast Asia, renowned for its striking, dark purple or black bat-shaped flowers with distinctive whisker-like bracts. Germination is slow and unpredictable, requiring consistent warmth (80-85°F), high humidity, and light; seeds may take 2-6 months to germinate and germination rates are typically very low (around 10%), making propagation challenging for most growers.

  • 💧

    Soaking — 24 hours
Warm water immersion for 24 hours using a thermos to maintain temperature consistency
  • 🔨

    Hot water scarification
Immerse seeds in warm water (comfortable to keep hands in) for 24 hours. Use a thermos to maintain consistent water temperature. If thermos unavailable, change water frequently to keep it warm.

    Additional notes
Use high-quality seed-starting mix that is light, porous, and well-draining to prevent damping-off. Recommended composition: 60% peat moss, 30% perlite, 10% vermiculite, or similar combination with perlite, pumice, or coir. Avoid heavy garden soil.

Substrate & Container
Recommended substrate
Light, porous, well-draining seed-starting mix containing peat moss, perlite, vermiculite, coir, or pumice

Recommended container
Shallow pots or seed trays covered with clear plastic wrap or transparent plastic dome to maintain humidity and moisture

Growing Tips
Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours in a thermos. Sow seeds 1/16 inch deep in pre-moistened seed-starting mix and lightly cover. Do not bury seeds too deeply as they require light to germinate. Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged; use a spray bottle rather than direct water to avoid disturbing seeds. Cover container with clear plastic wrap to maintain humidity and place in a warm location (80-85°F). Remove plastic cover daily to release excess moisture and prevent fungal issues. Place the container in a bathroom and expose seeds to steam from hot showers at night to accelerate germination. Be extremely patient as germination can take 2-6 months or longer. Once seedlings are large enough to handle (after first true leaf develops), transplant carefully into small individual pots as Tacca plants resent disturbance. Maintain high humidity and avoid direct sunlight for seedlings.
