Description
Xerophyta retinervis is a remarkable perennial plant native to southern Africa, renowned for its extreme drought tolerance and “resurrection” ability. During prolonged dry periods, the plant desiccates almost completely, with its narrow, grass-like leaves curling and turning brown. When rainfall returns, it rapidly rehydrates and resumes active growth, turning green within hours to days.
The species forms dense tufts or short woody stems topped with stiff, linear leaves marked by pronounced parallel veins. Under favorable conditions it produces attractive star-shaped flowers, typically violet to purple with contrasting yellow centers. Xerophyta retinervis thrives in full sun, rocky or sandy soils, and exposed sites with excellent drainage. It is well adapted to nutrient-poor substrates and requires minimal water once established.
Highly valued by collectors and botanists, this species is ideal for rock gardens, xeriscapes, and conservation plantings in warm, dry climates, where its resilience and unique life strategy make it both a scientific curiosity and an ornamental highlight.
