A beautiful, medium-sized, partially deciduous tree native to South Africa to 25 m tall with a spreading crown of pinnate, reddish emergent foliage and light purple flowers on upright spikes. The attractive seed pods are densely covered in golden hairs. The wood is durable and used for furniture and carving but the tree also makes a wonderful ornamental for warm temperate and tropical climates in USDA Zones 10 or above. Seeds should be soaked in hot water overnight before sowing.
