Leucadendron discolor is an evergreen shrub native to South Africa’s Western Cape, belonging to the Proteaceae family. It typically grows 1 to 3 meters tall and is valued for its striking silvery-green leaves and colorful bracts, which surround the inconspicuous flowers. Like other Leucadendron species, it is dioecious, with separate male and female plants.
The seeds are hard, nut-like, and enclosed in woody cones produced by female plants. They are adapted to survive fire and are released only when the cones open, often after exposure to heat. Seeds remain viable for long periods and are dispersed by wind once released.
