Leucospermum cordifolium, commonly known as the pincushion protea, is a showy evergreen shrub native to South Africa’s Cape region. It is best known for its large, rounded flower heads composed of brightly colored, slender styles that radiate outward like pins in a pincushion. Blooming mainly in spring and early summer, its flowers range from vivid orange and yellow to deep red tones, creating a striking display in gardens and floral arrangements.

The plant forms a dense, rounded shrub that can reach up to 2 meters in height and width, with leathery, green leaves that provide year-round texture. Adapted to the nutrient-poor, sandy soils of the fynbos, it thrives in full sun, well-drained conditions, and is drought-tolerant once established. Highly attractive to pollinators such as birds, bees, and butterflies, Leucospermum cordifolium is valued not only for its ornamental beauty but also for its ecological role. It is widely cultivated worldwide as a cut flower and landscape plant, especially in Mediterranean-type climates.
