Description

Solanum lycopersicum ‘Mortgage Lifter Halladay’s’ is a classic American heirloom beefsteak tomato developed in the 1930s by M.C. “Radiator Charlie” Byles, later maintained and selected by the Halladay family. The indeterminate plants are vigorous and long-lived, typically reaching 1.8 to 2.4 meters in height, and require strong staking or caging to support the heavy fruit load. Fruits are very large, smooth, and pinkish-red, often weighing 450 – 900 g, with meaty flesh, few seeds, and a rich, well-balanced flavor combining sweetness and mild acidity. This variety is especially valued for fresh slicing, sandwiches, and general kitchen use.

‘Mortgage Lifter Halladay’s’ performs best in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture and good airflow. It is renowned for its productivity, fruit size, and dependable performance throughout the growing season.

Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last expected frost date. Transplant outdoors only after all danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures are consistently above 16°C to 18°C. In mild or frost-free climates, seeds may be sown from late winter to early spring for optimal growth and high yields.
