Hakea victoria, commonly known as the royal hakea, is a spectacular and highly distinctive shrub species endemic to the Esperance Plains region of southwestern Western Australia. It is one of the most recognizable members of the genus Hakea due to its unique and colorful foliage.
The plant’s most notable feature is its stiff, prickly, and strikingly colored leaves. The leaves are broad and fan-shaped, with sharp spines along the margins. Young leaves are typically a pale greenish-yellow, but as they mature, the upper leaves turn a vibrant blend of creams, yellows, oranges, and deep reds. These showy leaves are arranged in a dense, spiral formation along the stems, with the most brilliant colors appearing on the upper sections of the plant.
While the foliage is its main attraction, Hakea victoria also produces small, creamy-white to pale yellow flowers that are relatively inconspicuous. These flowers are followed by large, woody fruits that are a characteristic feature of the genus Hakea. The plant is well-adapted to the nutrient-poor, sandy soils of its native habitat and is highly tolerant of drought. It is a slow-growing species and is a popular ornamental plant in arid and Mediterranean-style gardens.
